Exchanging Experiences, Expanding Opportunities

Puente in the Caribbean

An effective South-South Cooperation Mechanism

The Puente in the Caribbean Program began as a pilot initiative in June 2007 with the objective of enhancing social protection strategies in the English-speaking Caribbean using the Chilean Puente Program as a model. Since then Barbados, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago have received, with the support from the OAS, technical assistance from Chile in the implementation of the local versions of the Puente program.

The Inter-American Social Protection Network designed  a knowledge and experience exchange  strategy that included:

  • Training Workshops
  • Technical Assistance
  • Cultural exchange and interaction with families
  • Political Dialogue and Commitment
  • Strategic Partnerships
  • Educational Materials

The Puente in the Caribbean Program has left a significant mark on social protection strategies, which is demonstrated by the creation of programs such as Bridge in Jamaica, Koudemain Ste. Lucie in St. Lucia, RISE-UP in Trinidad and Tobago, ISEE Bridge in Barbados and LEAP in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

In this section you will find information related to cooperation and training activities and capacity building under the Puente in the Caribbean Program.
